The standard spare mounting means the drivers door opens about 2".

Some had the mounting modified to move if further back on the drivers side, clearing the door, and I've been told that the very last vehicles produced (for admin use in the US around the time they were obseleted) were produced without a spare or carrier.

Personally I rather like it in the standard configuration, you can roll down the window and just lean out on the wheel, and of course the only lock on the front is on the passengers side anyway.
