One field brush goes to ground, the other goed to the reg, which should be putting about 4.5-5.5 volts (from an old mans memory)into the field. The regulator needs to be grounded through it's case, use star washers when you mount it. Don't hook anything else into the field wire. Try running it without the reg-field wire, if it still overcharges it's an internal alt problem. This alternator is the easiest to work on with external brushes (you can change brushes w/ alt on the car, probly while running?)and press in diodes. Tricky thing with the brush holders is to make sure the mounting screw isn't grounding the wrong brush, giving 2 to ground and shorting the reg.(not your problem)
