I don't remember that there were any plugs in the front of the topcase bores. I completely disassembled my original topcase when I began the rebuild of my tranny in my '49 flatfender, but when I found a crack in the original topcase, I ended up buying a NOS topcase, with gear shifter handle, shift rails, shift forks, springs, balls, etc., already assembled and I know it didn't have any plugs covering the front side holes. There were three covering the back sides of the holes, though. I don't think you could put any plugs in the front if you wanted to, as the shift rails would punch them right out of there the first time you shifted through the gears.

By the way, the NOS topcase I bought came from Vintage Power Wagons, and it was a very reasonable $125 about two years ago. I don't know if they still have them or not, or how much they would cost if they did have them, but you can give them a call.
