Got time to read a book? Quick and dirty: take the generator out of the system--electrically and mechanically--apply battery voltage to the field and arm posts. If it motors it will generate. Generator and regulator need to be polarized if you disconnect either. MOMENTARILY connect a jumper between Bat and Gen terminal of regulator. Any good auto electric shop ought to be able to test either or both but I wouldn't bet on Auto Zone or Pep Boys
