Upshift, let out clutch, shift back to nuetral, double clutch and rev to bring gears back to 3rd gear speed (like it was a second ago, while you still remember), slip it into 3rd...smooth as silk....

Did your 48 have synchros? Old worn sloppy synchros might make it hard to shift, even for an old pro.

Anybody ever discuss shifting an old 5 tonner with TWO gear boxes? Right hand to rear lever, left arm THROUGH steering wheel (steer with you elbow on spokes)to front box, shift both at once, if you miss, stop the truck and start from dead stop because theres no way to guess which combination of gears to put it into while it's loosing speed so fast.... This is why it is still illegal to coast downhills in neutral, you couldn't get a crashbox back into gear, especially if the speed got up higher than the flathead would rev.
