Although you can get it for free off the internet, most people like the hand-holding you get with one of the commercial flavors like Red Hat. I am a unix person myself, but only at work. At home I am a windows slave until I get a free weekend, then I might create a linux partition and have my choice of operating systems at boot time. Red hat is available at any computer store like Best Buy or Frys.
