Ed -

I did the research a couple of years ago and found the PPG line to be a little moer user friendly to the amateur. This may not be the case today, and a lot depends on what you have available.

I used the PPG DP-40 series of catalized primers after sandblasting. The primers held up well (5 yrs w 1 yr outside) tho I sanded down the old primer and recoated it before applying color coat. I used the "slow" formula which requires a 30 min wait after mixing, but it is mil spec for corrosion resistance whereas the other formula is not. It shot well, but is *not* a fast-build primer.

The fenders/running boards/bumper (and everything else that's black) are the PPG Durethane product. This is a true urethane paint and fairly toxic (isocynates). Also a PITA to work with (3 part mix, thin and fussy) but better than IMRON if the people in the business are to be believed. Nice and shiney and wears like iron. It has held up well on the runing boards for a couple of years of fairly intermittant use.

The local (El Paso) paint shop steered me to the OMNI AU line of acrylic enamels for the color coat basecoat, saving several hunderd $$ over PPG. I used MBC for the basecoat and MC161 for clear. The MBC shot well, and I start clear coat this PM. They want you to clear coat within 24 hrs of the base so plan ahead.

The "Prophet" spectrophotometer came up with the following formula which I reproduce verbaitum. The color names are truncated on the printout. (I did proofread these.)

Code Color Cumulative Parts
M113 Medium C 230.8 230.8
M120 Tinting 596.0 365.2
M117 Jet Blac 1519.6 923.6
M121 Green Sh 2058.0 538.4
M150 Basemake 4116.8 2058.8

This appears to be a good match; there were a couple of patches on the door interior under the central panel (which were covered for the last 49 years) and they blended right in. The color looks good. Not the flashiest, but it was original on this truck and what I wanted.

I did not get an agent to "flatten" the clos of the clearcoat; in retrospect, this is probably an error as the original paint system was probably not this shiney. C'est la vie.

I made up a matrix of what part was what color, but don't remember where put it. IIRC, the findshield frame should be black and the cowl lights and grill bars green, with the main headlight buckets black.

Now for a couple of Advil and a return to the garage <grin>. [Its hell being an old fart].

Dave
