In my opinion the only really correct way is to take apart, strip, prime and paint, then re assemble. Its going to take longer, but everything has fresh paint, there is no rust lurking in any seam or between to panels. If done this way, It should last many years.
If you miss rust between panels or seams, your new paint may start to lift in thoes areas.I had my PW to the bare frame and had no problems at all putting it back to gether in alingment. I also suggest using a total paint system. For example I used PPG Omni
Base Coat Clear Coat, with the proper PPG metal etch, primer. Its all made to play together. I woud not mix and match.
