These trucks were "actually" being used as they were originally sold for practical off-road applications long years before anyone ever conceived of the idea of "4-wheeling" as a form of recreation in order to rationalize ownership of the likes of today's boulevard cruisers.
The fact that most PW's were put through the paces on the job in their previous lives is visible by the battle scars that remain. But the beauty of practical engineering along with a well-designed combination of first-rate replaceable componant parts is what makes them a legacy which we as PW owners have the priviledge of continuing to uphold.
