That was THE best season ever in the history of NASCAR, in my humble opinion.

The 1968 & 69 Fairlane/Torino/Cobra fastbacks were making a name for themselves. Ford upped the ante with the Talladega, which was pretty much a 69 Cobra with an extended nose. MOPAR countered with the "Winged Warriers". Races were close. When the smoke cleared, the Talladega was slightly ahead of the Winged Warriers. It was one of the most exciting race seasons ever.

Ironically, in 69, a Talladega won the Daytona race and a Daytona won the Talladega race.

BTW, I have a 69 Cobra. It had a 428 Cobra Jet in it. One of these days I'll get it back on the road with a new-in-the-crate 427 sideoiler with Medium Riser heads and a factory dual quad Tunnel Wedge intake (probably the closes thing to a Tunnel Ram the factories ever released for street use, though it is just barely streetable). The 428CJ and 427 are cousins, both being basically the same engine. The 428 is a stroked 406, which is a bored 390. The 427 shares the stroke of the 390/406, but has the biggest bore of all the "FE" family engines (332, 352, 360, 361, 30, 391, 406, 410, 427 & 428 - all very similar and most parts intechange). The bottom end of these engines are surprisingly similar to a 440 (the Ford dates to the mid t late 1950's), except for the 427 which is crossbolted.

I like both Fords and MOPARs, but I just cannot get excited about GM products.
