Carb trouble

I just got a thermo-quad for my 79 P/W from a 79 dodge van. The problem is when I punch the gas to open the secondaries while driving, there's a couple seconds of hesitation. Is this because the carb is from an automatic and my P/W is standard? Or do I most likely need a rebuild?
