The reasons given below are correct for cheap aftermarket headers. Quality headers have no such problems and emissions devices can work well with headers as witnessed by the fact that Jeep has installed factory headers on the I-6 for many years. Some Dodges also have modified versions and I'm sure that you will see more in the future. Just because it is a "Hot Rod" invention doesn't mean that Detroit won't, at some time, convert over to a better idea. Good examples are, seat belts, rack and pinyon steering, disc brakes, fuel injection, turbo chargers and premium sound systems. All of the afore mentioned came from the 'hobbiest' first. Sometimes the bean counters are slow to change or resistant to change. The plethora of vehicles available today has led to many inovations. Some manufactures are even using K&N type air filters now.
Good quality headers are a win-win solution to performance AND fuel economy. Todays coatings can eliminate the 'heating' problems.
