The local engine machine shop here in western SD has a spray weld process they use to build up seal surfaces. Once it is built up they put it in their crankshaft grinder to bring it back to the correct diameter. It leaves a beautiful finish. I had some pits in my crankshaft where the rear main seal rides. They used this process to fix it. The only evidence is a slightly yellower color ( no it's not brass or bronze, but a slightly different steel alloy ). I haven't run the engine yet so I can't give a durability report. The cost was $56 with tax. Sure beats a crank replacement cost.

Keep the faded paint up and the old rubber down.
