Usually, the cable winds on the bottom of the winch drum on a front mounted winch. This is because the vehicle tends to ride up over the cable thus "lifting" the vehicle up out of the mud, muck or whatever. One of the reasons you should generally not try to drive while winching out. The churning tires will just cut back into the soft ground. BOB
