Part of the problem of putting on an outside frame is that the canvas hangs down below the lip on the bed sides.

How about replacing the upright and crosspiece wood with rectangular metal tubing, then having holes sewn into the top of the canvas for six studs. You put the canvas over the studs, then attach a rack to the studs. The canvas would need a lip to keep water out, and you could put a large metal washer over a fabric or rubber washer to help keep water from leaking. The studs could be made removeable so you could go back to stock for show. This to me seems a lot simpler than building a big ugly frame outside frame. The only drawback is having to put holes in the canvas. The wood pieces might work, but I don't know how much weight you are going to put on them.
