the poly bellhousings do fit the early hemi. I just tried three different castings and they are all bolt ups. The early hemi crank protrudes 1 1/16" (+/-) to the flywheel face from the back of the block and has an 8 bolt flange. The 318 LA is 1/2" (+/-) to the flange and has a 6 bolt flange. I don't have an "A' 318 so I can't measure that one. The 318"A" (poly) uses an 8 bolt flywheel that is the same staggered pattern as the hemi as I just stuck one on my hemi. The "A" is apparently an internally balanced engine as the flywheel has no cast or added weights. This is to say, that it appears that you can use your hemi's with the 318 "A" bell housing and flywheel. Good enuff?
