Everyone should be aware of spyware. It's code or cookies that get loaded when you visit sites that specialize in tracking people's internet use. Very few virus scanners block spyware since it is not your run of the mill virus.
If your browser does strange things or you've started getting popups you probably have spyware running on your machine.
Go to google.com and search for spyware or adaware. A site (lavasoft) has a writeup and a spyware remover you can use (for free).
My wife's machine had 9 of the things running - internet was extremely slow. After visiting lavasoft and running the remover she smiles again - even with the 56K modem.
