David,...
One of the reasons that American made items have become so cheaply made is because of the flood of chinese and cheap asian imports. They are the PROBLEM not the solution! Where in the hell are Americans supposed to work if everything is imported? You must have missed the thread of a few weeks back where the piss poor quality of chinese tools, engine stands and other items were dicussed adnauseam. We need to learn the difference between saving money and selling our future.
One of the real reasons that the Power Wagon could never again be built the way it once was is our friends, the misquided, leftist environmental, "save us from ourselves" crowd. The Power Wagon of old has no padded dash, no air bags, no smog devices and could not meet the federally mandated fuel requirements or the government safety requirements. Think about that the next time you look at a window sticker on a new vehicle. Most of that plastic is there because weight equals poor mileage, the metal is now thinner, frames are lighter, drivetrains are less capable, all because of government regulations, not because the American auto industry wants to build poor quality equipment.
I hope this is not taken personal, but we need to learn from our past history, not blindly drift in the direction of the politically correct crowd. That is what sets Dodge owners apart from the crowd in the first place, our ability to think and not be swayed by the normal conventional wisdom that says gm and ferd are the only vehicles out there. Gordon Manley said it best in one of his articles, to paraphase (sorry Gordon) The Dodge Power Wagon is a fine tool that gets better with age as all fine tools do. Nothing from china that I have seen is close to being a useful tool or fine. They are crude, poorly made (by slave labor no less) copies of 40 year old American ideals.

Frustrated, but still, MoparNorm
