You bring up a good point. Nowadays, with everything computer-designed, they use the steel more efficiently so that each part is just strong enough to carry the design stress. I think old trucks are more forgiving of dented or bent parts and of crude modfications and welding and drilling. I don't know if any light trucks are using heat-treated steel, but many heavy trucks do, which means if somebody foolishly welded on it it can be seriously weakened without any obvious sign of it.
