A friend of mine grew up on a farm. His dad bought a '71 Chevy pickup 1/2-ton brand new, with 250 cid 6-cylinder and 3-speed manual transmission. They used that truck to haul cattle to shows, horses, lots of hay, etc., and got 200,000 miles out of the original engine, 150,000 miles out of the original clutch, 300,000 miles on the original tranny. They now have over 200,000 miles on the next engine, and the truck still runs great! Very little work has been done to the suspension and steering and nothing to the rear axle.

They have a 1-ton for the heavier stuff, but for many years it didn't get used nearly as much as the old 1/2-ton.

Just my two cents.
