231 Oil Pan Removal

Can the oil pan be removed from a 231 engine without hitting the axle or oil pick up tube? I need to retreive my fuel pump plunger from the bottom of the oil pan. I have already tried to fish it out of the fuel pump hole with a magnet but no luck. Any advice out there???
