I think you want TDC on number one. Remove #1 plug, put your finger in the the hole and crank it over till it blows your finger out of the hole, put the distributor where it belongs for TDC and you will be close. You can turn the distributor with the engine running until it sounds right. This is the way the army taught us in wheeled vehicle school for M37's. Don't ask me how long ago that was.
