If the rust completely covers the sides of the teeth where both gears mesh, and the rust is deep, then the gear is pretty much no good. If it has spots here and there on the tooth surface, then your ok, even if it's deep. Take a file and knock off any loose pieces, clean the gear, and run a 40% Lucas Oil Stabalizer with 60% S.A.E 90w gear oil.
