Sandblast, but only sand - don't let them use a grit blast.
When it's clean MIG up all the sections you need to repair, but watch out for areas that have been brazed or leaded - you'll have to grind or melt out that before you can weld.
VPW do that thrice-darned roof cross strip that causes so much hassle as a repro.
