Tips. Rebuilding is pretty straight forward, just need to do some upgrading for unleaded fuel.
- Use hardened valve seats. Kits and valves are available;
- Make sure the water distribution tube is replaced;
- Have the machinist check cylinder and crank wear and go with their recommendation;
- Have the cam bearings and block plugs replaced;
- Use new timing chain and gears;
- Replace your oil pump with a rebuilt or new;
- Have the head checked for warppage and have resurfaced if needed. Blow the head out with air to remove loose rust so none fall under the head when you assemble causing the head to leak;
- You may want to balance the engine;
- On your reassembly, place the oil ring gap at the center of the piston pin, either side, and each compression ring staggered 90 degrees from each gap. This provides maximum oil control and compression;
- Fel-pro gasket set seems to be a good one especially the head gasket, they seem to work well;
- Do use a 50% mixture of oil/STP on assembly of parts or assembly lube.

VPW probably sells a repair manual. Good Luck!
