I replaced the engine in my 1959 PJ with a rebuilt 1978 318. The truck originally came with the flat head six with the front engine mount and later had a wide block 318 put in it for which someone had put in new side mounts. I used the same side mounts for the new engine. Otherwise, the 1978 318 bolted right to the bell housing. I assume it is the same with all the PJs. No problem with exhaust there is plenty of room. I did have to move the radiator forward. The 318 sets lower than the six and the distributor is close to the firewall. Be careful you don't break it (the distributor)when installing. I also had to modify the gas pedal linkage.
