Gear Whine

My 52 Power Wagon has a very loud gear whine at speeds over 30 MPH - it has only 8,000 miles on odometer - transfer case was leaking oil, tightened bolts and filled with 90 wt oil - the whine is only when gas pedal is depressed, on trailing throttle or coasting, the sound dissapears, even my neighbors can tell when I'm passing by as the noise is obvious to them too - any suggestions,ideas or similar experiences - this can't be normal
