This truck came with a 354 Hemi, no diesel or other gaspot was offered in the D900 configuration. The truck 354 had 218hp@3900rpm. The truck version was made 1957-59. Chrysler used the 354 between 1956-58 with 280-310hp. Imperial had it in 1956 with a 280hp rating. Dodge cars had it 1957 using dual carbs in a 340hp model.
If you want a diesel, it might be a tall order to shoehorn a 855cid Cummins 6 in a rig that's built for a small gas V8. Engine length is probably a consideration so a triple nickel(555) Cummins V8, 3208 Cat V8, or a screaming Jimmy in a turbo inline 53 or 71 series would work. If you found a 6V or 8V 53 series that would make plenty of racket....especially if it had Jakes. There's been lots of these smaller diesels used in trucks of the same size as the D900 and to find a engine/trans takeout would be a snap. Find one that has the compressor, power steering pump, and mounting crossmember/frame mounts and go for it!!
