I forget to re-tourque the head after 500 miles and developed a slight leak (re-built 1953 230 Flathead - Rebuilt about 3000 miles ago). I replaced the head gasket this weekend and inspected the combustion chamber. I found ALOT of carbon build up on both the top of the piston and the bottom of the head. I would guess about the thickness fo three peices of paper, maybe a little less. I leaned out the mix considerably and replaced the gasket. All seems OK now. Although I had planned to drive the truck off freeway most of the time, I have put alot of freeway miles on it.

The question is, does freeway driving require more air than secondary street driving and is the oil bath air cleaner contributing to the build up of carbon by starving the air/fuel mixture of a little bit of air thus enriching the air/fuel mixture? ( run on sentence - Mrs. Zazarati would have wacked my knuckles)

I have often thought of taking my extra air cleaner and modifying it to accept a paper filter and doing away with the oil bath air cleaner while keeping the original look. Does anybody have any thoughts on doing this?
