Hey Mike,

I am at work so I do not have all of the numbers, but here is what Dave and I deciphered from the parts manuals:

From 1946 until about 1954 or 1955 (C1PW or C3PW) the transfer case used identical splined shafts for the input to the transfer case and for the output to the front driveshaft. These are the shafts on which the sliding gears ride that cause the shift from 2WD to 4WD and from Hi to Lo range. The 1946, 1948, 1951, and 1953 parts manuals all agree on these two parts as being the same and list one common number for both of them.

The 1956 parts manual lists the two shaft as having changed part numbers with the C-series. It also shows that the input, or "upper", shaft changed at this time to a design having shorter fully tappered teeth rather than the previous longer square teeth.
The output, or "lower", shaft retained the long square teeth even though its part number changed.

I have a reason to believe the 1954 parts manual may show at exactly what serial number this change took place. I was asking if anyone has access to a 1954 Power-Wagon parts manual in order to comfirm the change over time frame. I do not have the number of the manual with me, but it is the number that is shown as being superseeded on the covers of the 1956 manual. This superseeded number is not the number of the 1953 manual, so the 1954 version does exist. I have seen only a Xerox copy of its cover.

Unfortunately this small detail in change of parts that had previously elluded us still does not solve Dave's vibration and noise problems that he is finding in Gus.

Clint
