When more of the cable is out(to the extent of about 5 wraps around the drum) the MORE pulling powerer you have, in accordance with the winches rateing. IN OTHER WORDS, if your winch is rated at 8,000 pounds and it has only about 25 feet of cable out(of say 250 feet) it's pulling power is at only(a guess here)about 1000 pounds.The MORE cable you have out(leaving at least 5 wraps of cable around the drum) the closer to the winches rated pulling power you are.
