Guy,
A snatchblock is a pulley that opens to allow the cable to be placed. By running the cable through the block,(which is attached to the object to be pulled), and back to the winch attachment point you effectively double the pulling power of the pulley,(though you halve the pulling speed). There is a diagram under the glove box area which talks about winching basics.
