The description below assumes that you have a dial indicator.

When you are ready to install the PTO, drain all the gear oil from the transmission. Then remove the left side cover plate and do your best to remove all the gear oil from the gear teeth that mesh with the PTO gear teeth (use solvent or something). Also, make sure the teeth in the PTO are clean. Install the PTO with a couple of gaskets and remove the right side transmission cover. Clean the teeth exposed on the right side and place a dial indicator on that side, with the indicator plunger positioned against one gear tooth in such a way as to measure backlash.

Hold the PTO output shaft stationery while you move the transmission gear and look at the dial indicator. I don't have the specs for your transmission, but my transmission is the earlier non-synchronized transmission and I would image the desired clearance (backlash) should be about the same. The clearance for the early transmission is supposed to be between 0.003" and 0.008". If you do not have clearance within this range, either add gaskets to increase clearance or remove gaskets to decrease until you have it right. If you cannot get it within the range, it's best to have clearance a little larger than spec, rather than a little smaller than spec.

When you are finished, you should not hear any noise coming from the PTO when the truck is running. If you do, you probably have too little backlash, and you'll have to add gaskets. This happened to me and once I added an extra gasket, the noise went away.

Good luck!

Matt
