No,
Sorry to say it wasn't,although had many thoughts of how useful it would be. Have to say this journey was the highlight of my trip as I was the first American ever to travel the route we took. This wildlife sanctuary about 700,000 acres is one of the 10 most important remaining in the world. Around 10,000 spieces of insects alone in one square kilometer. When my translator Surin first started showing me pictures and information, it really caught my attention.
Their non-profit organization-Western Forest Conservation Club, is dedicated to preserving one of the last remaining pristine forests in Asia. We donated enough money for them to purchase a solar cell for charging radio batteries at one of the ranger stations. I was able to help them install it as well as erect another radio tower at another station.Because it is a wildlife sanctuary, funding for anything is virtually impossible and these good folks spend 1 week a month volunteering to build wildlife checkpoints, bathrooms, kitchens and support the rangers. teachers and the villagers who live in small numbers within the wildlife sanctuary. Really saw how important this group is with regard to saving this forest.
If anyone has any interest in a charitable dontation this is a great one. I am trying to get them to translate some of the information to English on their website and will keep you posted. It was a once in a lifetime trip for me and still can't stop thinking about it.
I have this idea that maybe we could get a few Dodges donated from someone over there, we could supply the parts and than gather a volunteer crew from here in the US to go over and teach these rangers how to maintain and take care of these trucks. 700,000 acres and they have one vehicle for the head of the wildlife sanctuary! The rangers patrol it on foot, many without shoes, not even enough for motorcyles. There is a great need and think it would be an interesting and useful project. Anyone interested?
Dave
