A modest increase in static compression ratio to say 9:1 shouldn't require use of premium gasoline.

In fact the mid to late eighties Jaguar engine with the heart shaped combustion chamber still holds the record for highest static compression ratio without detonation running 87 octane. The compression ratio was 10.5 to 1.

Static compression ratio is only part of the equation though. Most engines would benefit more from an increased "dynamic" compression ratio brought about by increased volumetric efficiency (VE).

Given the lack of breathing ability of the flathead design the dynamic compression ratio is probably something more like 4:1
