My exhaust ends about 2 feet ahead of the rear diff and I don't have a problem. One of the things I do when assembling the exhaust system is use high temp exhaust gasket silicone on everything from the gaskets to the muffler on the pipe. It seals and also keeps things from rusting together so parts come apart easy. You might try that. Also on the passenger side of the engine there is either an open tube that points directly down (1 inch or so in diameter) to the bottom of the engine or a steel line that bolts into the metering valve at the intake manifold. If you have the open tube, then your smelling the gases generated from inside the engine. Find an engine with the closed system and get the parts to convert yours. Like Randy said, make sure the hose from the filler tube is connected to the air cleaner. Good Luck!
