1957 and later PW'S (WDX style ) had NP 420's in them. The NP 420 has squared flanges/ears that bolt the tranny up to the bell housing where the older spur gear trannys have off set bolt up's, so you'd have to change out your bell housing also. No the old spur gear pto will not work on the helical counter geared NP 420 unless you could change out the pto idler gear.
