With a 55 PW I will assume that you have a NP 420 transmission. Neither the emergency brake or the transfercase shift handles mount on the top of the transmission case. They both mount to the bosses on the side of the transmission. The emergency brake lever mounts closest to the transmission using the lower front and rear boss. Its mounting plate is right up against these bosses. It is held in place by the bolts that mount the transfer case shift lever mounting plate. This plate is held about 1 inch away from the e brake lever by 3 small tubular spaces that the mounting bolts pass through. The spaces are two sizes if I remember correctly. The upper one is the longest as it goes between the boss and the shift lever mounting plate. The other two are shorter as the e brake mounting plate goes between them and their respective boss. The shift lever mounting plate is mounted so that the piviot rod is at the lowest point and points away from the side of the transmission. If you do not have these spacers or have the wrong length ones, it is impossible to figure out how to mount the ebrake and shift handles. If you have the earlier non synchro transmission, the mounting is basically the same. If I am correct the e brake is interchangable between the two transmissions but I am not sure that the shift lever mount is.

It took me a while to figure out how to get these mounted. There should not be any interference with either the dash or the shift levers and the e brake. There is only one way that the shift levers can go on and work. If you slide them on to their piviot rod they must be in the same slot i.e. one directly in front of the other. The front shifter should have a small boss on its back side and the rear shift lever has a boss on the front side. These bosses should come in contact or come close to each other if both levers are shifted in the same fore or aft direction.
