Supposed to keep your oil cleaner therefore reducing wear on the engine. That is probably the main advantage. In the case of a car not sure just how much it would help but it may not be much trouble either. For the M37 I think it was installed so that it could be run under water, I think it would be worth it on a PW for just that.
