Hi Chewie,
The 318-3 is known as the Premium engine 318, it was normally found in the W300 and W500. The differences are, roller timing chain, hydraulic lifters instead of solid lifters. It had lower compression ratios, special alloy rods and bearings, higher pressure oil pump, a larger oil pan, and tighter tolerances for the crank and pistons, it also had slightly smaller valves. It was built to work hard.
