You need to offset the rims.

It isn't enough to measure the cross section of the tire. You have to take into account the buldge of the tire from weight and object impact. The tires must never rub each other. If you will look at true dualie rims, the center section is offset to space the tires further apart. You could take the outer wheels and have the center sections moved outboard to accomodate that. Or buy proper dualie rims in the first place.

I think spacers are trouble. Better to have rim to rim to hub/brakedrum contact.

The 750x16 rims on the old WC 1/2 tonners were offset so they could be dualed. Unfortunately, you cannot put them on later trucks due to clearance problems with the brake drums. And their bead angle has been cited by some as being wrong for mounting 900x16 tires safely on them. Others disagree and say they are perfectly safe.

Keep in mind that if you decide to go to offset rims in all positions, the front tires and the inner rear tire will be moved inboard. Check for clearance issues, especially for suspension travel and steering up front.
