Hi,
The 8 3/4 was used for a long time, but you'll want a '65 and later unit with flanged axles (not tapered as they are hard to work on). 30 spline axles and uses the same bearing as a 35 spline Dana 60 car rear. Lots of parts available, gears, bearings, lockers, limited slips, etc. Can be made unbreakable, Big Daddy's top fuel dragsters used 'em. Dana 60 or 70 full floater is much better in a heavy truck as you get much better bearings.
The 727 was used in both a cable-shift and a modern version, changing in '66. There are 727s available for slant 6/273-318-340-360/383-400-440 etc (three distinct bellhousing patterns). There are also some differences in the tailhousings for crew cab trucks and the like. Later units might contain lockup, etc. '71 and later have desireable part-throttle downshift.

email if you have questions,
regards,
mark
