727's are very over engineered if anything, they were designed for high output engines, but were put behind /6's even. Infact when they were first produced they were made from cast iron I've read. 727's are infact what A518's are (found in later model Jeep G. Cherokees and Dodge trucks) but 518's had a overdrive unit added, but looks like an afterthought addition. Also I'd like to note, 518's do have serious problems with lubrication in the overdrive unit, but the tried and trued 727's reputation is better than Chevy's Hydro 400s in most circles. 8 and 3/4's I'll risk this statement - at lest in the 70s you'd never find them under anything larger than a D or W 100 truck. Dodge engineers decided 9 1/4 (stop sign cover design) was needed with any truck with a V-8 almost, and Dana 60s and once in a while a Dana 70, and I believe their logic to be sound in this regard. I also believe 9 1/4s are cheaper to aquire and service too.
