Because you might be looking mostly at pre-1957 manuals. All flat fenders used the NP 200 transfer case that had NO hole for the PTO, which means the PTO had to be mounted on the transmission because there is no other place to mount it.

The W100/W200 trucks introduced in 1957 (and the W300 introduced in 1958) all used the NP 201 transfer case, which had the 10 bolt hole to mount a PTO. Manuals for these truck should discuss transfer case/PTO set up.

In 1969 trucks, the NP 201 t/c was replaced by the NP 205 t/c, which has a SASE standard 6 bolt hole PTO opening. So any manual after 1956 should discuss the transfer case/PTO set up.
