I beleive the early M37's used the crash box that probably would work with the PTO but here are the options to your problem:
1. Get a bellhousing and spur gear transmission from a PW or M37. Switch yours out, then you can mount the PTO
2. Get a PTO for the NP420 tranny to mount to your present transmission. You can pickup a used one for about $250 average from an MVPD. Or you can get a new Chelsea or Muncie PTO for your tranny, but your will need to know the number of teeth on the cluster gear for matching a gear for the new PTO
