There is a grvel plain in North Portland that is releasing a lot of radon gas. Some sand and gravel companies are located there. The radon released from the sand and gravel is not usually an issue, as it is used for roads and concrete.

HOWEVER, you can release radon via sandblasting, when the grains of sand become pulverized. If you insist on using common sand, you need a filter mask that is rated to filter out radon daughters. Most industrial supply houses carry these. The filter is very fine, so it clogs quickly. You'll need a pre-filter on it. A beard defeats the mask.
