Good comparison to gold. The same mentality that has hermits living a life in poverty with bags of gold under the floorboards is at work here. A lot of those people think anyone asking about a truck is trying to steal a heirloom from them the week before it becomes priceless on the open market.
Others see the trucks as emotional ties to a lost family member and want to keep the trucks as a shrine.
In either case, I doubt is anything is going to change until the owner passes on. The only way around this might be if you are friends with a family member who can talk sense to the person.
Come to think of it, I told my son that if he ever sold the Townie, I'd come back and haunt him. Hmm - better have another talk with him tonight. I see the other side now :-).
