Jock: That big cast steel round holder onner thing must be tight. I had mine holding the spare on my '48 for a few years, but I naively didn't tighten it until the nut bottomed the steel plate/wheel against the mount. I just compressed the tire against the box until it distorted the rubber. Yes the full tire weight is on the running board.

Well, one day I was trundling along and I heard a clank and thump. The spare departed post haste on a city street at about 30 mph. Right through a busy intersection flopping over in a parking lot. Thank god that 900/16 didn't hit anyone or anything other than a hydrant.

I was so worried yet relieved at that I didn't even see the looks on peoples faces.
Must have been a sight, some guy in a business suit&tie hefting that tire into a crusty old truck.
