Hi RD, because, while the Poly is 50 lbs heavier than the 318LA, most of that weight is in the heads which is the power source of the Poly. The 318LA can't come close to a Poly for HP or torque and as far as being obsolete, the new Dodge racing engines and the "new" Mopar Hemi's are basically Polys, so the more things change, the more things stay the same. The Poly is the most underated engine ever built. The size of the block and mounting points are not that much different from the LA and the Poly breathes better than any engine except the Hemi.
