It makes no difference if the cable comes off the top or bottom. The cable doesn't care what is up or down. You can wrap standard lay cable either way on a drum (R>L or L>R). I have never come across left hand lay. Does not mean it isn't out there, but have never delt with it in over 30 years as a Theater rigger. There is a multitude of different wire ropes for specialized applications.
